Catherine Bertola: "Unravelling the Manor House" Preston Manor, Brighton, UK

Unravelling the Manor House sees twelve artists and makers using or subverting the notion of craft in extreme and conceptual ways. Each of the artists is developing new artworks specifically for the exhibition. The work responds to the house and will bring the existing collection at Preston Manor to life. We have included a broad cross section of artists working in a variety of media and at various stages of their careers. We are aiming to provide a high profile showcase for contemporary artists and makers and engage artists with historic houses and stimulate practical craft activity and debate. Selected artists Gavin Fry, James Hunting, Maria Rivans, Matt Smith, Louise Batchelor, Laura Splan, Kira O'Reilly, Penny Green, Catherine Bertola, Ingrid Plum, Emma Moloney and Caitlin Heffernan The exhibition will open at Preston Manor, part of Royal Pavilion & Museums, Brighton & Hove in May 2010. One of the five sites under the care of Royal Pavilion & Museums, Brighton and Hove, Preston Manor evokes the atmosphere of an Edwardian gentry house both, upstairs, and downstairs. Dating from c.1600, rebuilt in 1738 and substantially added to in 1905, the house and its contents give a rare insight into life during the early years of the 20th century. Visitors can explore more than twenty rooms over four floors, from the servant's quarters, kitchens and butler's pantry in the basement to the attic bedrooms and nursery on the top floor. Jo Coupe Crystalline Energy Location: Rio Tinto Alcan Aluminum Plc, Lynemouth, Northumberland Dates of exhibition: 1-7th May 2010 Artist's talk: 7.30pm Tuesday 4th May at Longhirst Hall, Morpeth. Jo Coupe's residency at Rio Tinto Alcan, one of the world's leading suppliers of bauxite, alumina and aluminium began in 2007, initiated by public art and design initiative, Inspire Northumberland. This residency offered the artist unprecedented access to the fascinating work of Rio Tinto Alcan at their smelter in Lynemouth, Northumberland. In response to this extraordinary environment, Jo Coupe has researched and developed a new body of work, centred around the powerful electromagnetic fields that are a unique by-product of aluminium manufacturing. The conclusion of Coupe's residency will be a showcase of this new work on site at the Lynemouth Smelter. This exhibition will include a temporary site-specific installation in the basement of the smelter and an exhibition in a converted shipping container. The exhibition in the shipping container, near the entrance to the Lynemouth site will be open 10am - 5pm, Saturday 1st, Tuesday 4th, Weds 5th, Thursday 6th and Friday 7th May. Access to the temporary installation in basement of the potrooms is restricted and is strictly by appointment. Artist-led tours are available on Saturday 1st May (1pm and 3pm), Tuesday 4th (4pm and 5.45pm), Weds 5th (11am), Thursday 6th (1pm and 3pm). Places on these tours are very limited and are available on a first-come-first-served basis. The work I have produced during this residency explores the tension between scientific realism and magic, addressing our desire for wonder in the face of the rational. My research has focused on exploring the electromagnetic fields in the potrooms, where the actual smelting takes place. What intrigues me about this environment is its ability to produce phenomena (levitating objects, keys sticking rigidly from walls and photographs with strange auras) which might, in a different context, be seen as evidence of supernatural activity This residency was commissioned by Inspire Northumberland and funded by Rio Tinto Alcan, Arts & Business, Inspire Northumberland.

Metes and Bounds Catherine Bertola and Pauline Kraneis Galerie M + R Fricke, Berlin, Germany 1 May to 19 June 2010       Catherine Bertola shows two recent works Unseen by all but me alone and From the palace at Hillstreet. Recent work From the palace at Hillstreet has developed from the artist's on going exploration of the nascent stages of the women's movement in the 18th century. In From the palace at Hillstreet, three fragments of carpet are shown, which have been re-made over a period of nine months by the artist and by volunteers. This carpet was originally commissioned by Elizabeth Montagu, the leader of the Bluestockings Society and was made for her dressing room, which held the first meeting of this underwritten but powerfully influential group that affected the history of women's rights. The importance of this work lies not only in the re-activation of a hand-craft which is now mechanised and exported out-with the UK, but also to remember the importance of the Bluestockings Society in history. The meetings held by the group were social events in which the group's members used their fortunate social and financial standing to initiate the fight for gender equality in the UK at a very early stage. The members of the Bluestocking Society sought and effected change directly by using their fortunate position to commissioning talented female practitioners of the time in order to see them included in art and craft history.   Pauline Kraneis is devoted to the definition of drawing in parallel to the definition of both mental and physical space. Kraneis' work often uses furnishing within the interiors of both private and public buildings to explore the cross-over of mental and physical space. By the omission of furniture or interior features these interventions translate the chosen spaces into installations which pull apart the visual perception of the space  . Workplace Gallery presents: Killing Time A new 16mm Film Installation by Catherine Bertola Open Space, 44th Art Cologne, April 21 - 25, 2010 www.openspace-cologne.com Hall 11, Cologne - Deutz Exhibition Centre Messeplatz 1 50679 Cologne, Germany In her recent series of works Killing Time Catherine Bertola has filmed historic photographs of English Country Houses. Having fallen into disrepair or demolished some time ago, each of these interior spaces no longer exists. In choosing to film the lost settings (a medium associated with the 'live' or a representation of the live moment) Bertola re-animates the interiors, creating a haunting image where a lost past is rendered visible in the present. Within each interior Bertola has superimposed her own image, re-occupying the historic spaces with her contemporary presence. The placement of her body swamped by the interior decor of the large rooms imbues the image with an immense sense of isolation. This isolation mirrors the presence of previous female occupants whose role within these lavish interiors echoed the decorative design of the room - a theater set for their own display - their days spent sitting, sewing, 'killing time'. With Bertola's presence the interior settings, or sets become a haunted space - part historical, part contemporary, and always on the edge of the fantastical. This sense of the fantastical is further enhanced by Bertola's choice of using postcard sized film screens whose small format recall illustrations from history and story books. ISIS ARTS INVITES YOU TO AN ARTIST TALK EVENT WITH SWEDISH ARTIST Cecilia Stenbom WEDNESDAY 17TH MARCH 2010 18:00 – 20:00 Come to meet and hear about the work of ISIS Arts artist in residence, Cecilia Stenbom. Cecilia Stenbom’s  artworks and films explore notions of identity and relationships in a  mediated world. She examines our desires by appropriating genres of mass  media and commodity such as advertising, documentary and the TV movie,  fulfilling the expectations that those genres set up. Previous works have included “The Protocol” (2008), a re-enactment  of an American infomercial, “The Inspector” (2007) a narrative  based on female television cops and “Search & Destroy” (2006)  a “first person” account of experiences as a US marine in  the Vietnam War based on cult movies on that subject. During the research residency at ISIS Arts Cecilia is developing and  producing a new body of work that is investigating capitalisation and  dramatisation of domestic concerns, such as health, security and safety.  As  part of this project, Cecilia is using a wide range of source material  such as real rescue drama documentaries, mortality statistics and first  aid equipment. This project will culminate in a solo exhibition at Workplace  Gallery in 2010. Cecilia has received a grant from Arts Council England  to develop and produce this work. “In my artworks my subject is myself. Through my own image I explore notions of identity and relationships in a mediated world. I examine our desires by appropriating genres of mass media and commodity such as advertising, documentary and the TV movie, fulfilling the expectations that those genres set up. Through the means of a kind of narcissistic projection into fantastical roles such as a US Marine, Police Cop, or Multilingual Translator I try to find ways to examine the systems inherent in contemporary culture. Forming a knowingly amateurish pastiche I attempt to carry through to completion the wants of a culture that I see constantly beckoning to a place that arguably should never be reached. ” Cecilia Stenbom 2009                                                                                                                                                                                                                         Cecilia works in a wide range of material including drawing,  painting, installation, sculpture, artists books, and photography, although  her main focus lies in video. Jennifer Douglas: 'The Short Score', DLI Museum and Durham Art Gallery, Durham UK

Jennifer Douglas The Short Score DLI Museum and Durham Art Gallery Preview Friday 5th March at 6:00pm www.durham.gov.uk/dli The Short Score is a newly commissioned work by Jennifer Douglas that brings a sense of playful, but also demanding, investigation of 'matter' through her creation of intricate worlds of fantasy. Viewers are invited to test their boundaries and notions of objects and space, fiction and reality. Spanning drawing, sculpture, and installation, Douglas's work reveals structures of thought that are both abstract and literal. Among the variety of ways in which artists produce their work, two predominate.  The artist may either engage in extensive research and planning prior to the work's execution, in which case the work's 'problems' have been more or less 'solved' in what might be called its preliminary design process; or, they may adopt a more intuitive approach, responding to materials and entering into an open dialogue with them as the work develops. It is the latter that characterises the working process of Jennifer Douglas. Such extemporization does not necessarily result, however, in the inconsistency or arbitrariness that one might expect from unregulated freedom.  Certain techniques, formal arrangements and aesthetic preferences recur, giving the artist's work - in this case Douglas's - the coherence of a virtual language.
