The Gainsborough Packet is a new work by Matt Stokes based on a letter written in 1828 by an ordinary man named John Burdikin who lived in Newcastle upon Tyne and Gateshead. The letter was the inspiration for lyrics, music and a Super 16mm film created by Stokes and his collaborators on the project, which trace Burdikin's life and adventures.

Matt Stokes is an artist based in NewcastleGateshead. His work is also currently on view at Arthouse in Austin, Texas and 176/Zabludowicz Collection in Camden, London.

The Gainsborough Packet is a co-commission between BALTIC and 176/Zabludowicz Collection, London.
