MATT STOKES DANCE SWINE DANCE 1 February - 29 March 2014 Preview: Friday 31 January, 6-8pm
Matt Stokes' work is concerned with an ongoing inquiry into subcultures and phenomena that provide a sense of collectivity; shaping and influencing peoples lives and identitites.
Winner of the Becks Futures Prize (2006) and more recently shortlisted for the Northern Art Prize (2009) and the Jarman Award (2012), Newcastle-based Stokes has established an international reputation for his lyrical, elegiac films focussing on music subcultures that are part anthropology, part tribute and part collaboration.
With this exhibition the Grundy will show a selection of his most important works alongside additional, previously unseen archival material. Visitors can expect to see a range of historic and contemporary music scenes represented, including Northern Soul, 'cave raves' from the early 90s and American punk from Austin, Texas.
Matt Stokes Dance Swine Dance is accompanied by a public programme of events taking place throughout the exhibition:
