Marcus Coates, will launch his installation The Sounds of Others: A Biophonic Line during the Manchester Science Festival 2014. Marcus uses custom built software to explore the sounds of animals, such as field crickets, starlings, humpbacked whales, lions and humans, to reveal unimagined connections between species and unearth common patterns and forms that would normally be beyond the reach of the human ear.

For this work Marcus Coates has studied hundreds of animal sounds to discover the minute but discernible connections between them. By stretching and compressing the sounds, resemblances between them appear. The installation reveals a complex and fascinating world of acoustic communication and our connection with it.

Cape Farewell, renowned for connecting artists and scientists, presents the Lovelock Art Commission, an annual commission that invites an artist to take inspiration from the lifelong work of the famous scientist James Lovelock.

In conversation with Marcus Coates and Geoff Sample

Join Professor Andy Miah in this conversation with acclaimed artist Marcus Coates and wildlife sound recordist Geoff Sample about connectivity and the relationships between entities that we are part of, but not aware of. Marcus will explain how his digital installation 'The Sounds of Others: A Biophonic Line' reveals unexpected links between different species. He will also discuss how James Lovelock's Gaia Theory inspired the installation as well as his long term fascination with vocalisation as tool to reconsider our relationship with the natural world.
