The Parade begins at the Life Pulse sculpture on Blackwellgate, 12 noon on Saturday 3 May.

Visual Artist of the Year - Journal Culture Awards

 

Workplace Gallery is delighted to congratulate Cecilia Stenbom on being awarded Visual Artist of the Year 2013 at the Journal Culture Awards hosted at The Sage Gateshead.

 

Cecilia Stenbom's work is concerned with notions of identity in a consumer driven and information rich culture and how even the most mundane and seemingly unassuming moments are affected by the abundance of information surrounding us. She examines our anxieties and desires, reinterpreting scenarios within entertainment, mass media, retail, and domestic life.  She works across media including video, film, installation, drawing and painting.

 

Stenbom is originally from Stockholm, Sweden. She completed her BA in Fine Arts at the Academy of Fine Arts in Helsinki in 2003 and an MFA at Glasgow School of Art in 2005. Recent projects include North By Northeast, Commission and residency with Berwick Visual Art and Berwick Film and Media, Nobody Gets Out Of Here Alive, Kaapelin Galleria, Helsinki, Rotterdam International Film Festival, Holland, Glasgow Short Film Festival, London Short Film Festival, Happy Fashion, VIAINDUSTRIAE, Perugia, Italy, (I'm Having) The Time of My Life, Tampere Film Festival, Tampere, Finland and Moving Image Art Fair, NY, USA. She has recently been awarded a commission to develop a short film by Creative England part of the BFI NET.WORK.

 

Stenbom will open her second solo exhibition of new work at Workplace Gallery Gateshead in June 2014.

We are very proud to announce that Laura Lancaster has donated a large painting to the MTV RE:DEFINE auction benefiting the MTV Staying Alive Foundation http://stayingalivefoundation.org - to be held tonight at Dallas Contemporary, curated by The Future Tense and Peter Doroshenko in collaboration with the Goss-Michael Foundation. 


"This painting was made from a found photograph of a 1940's snapshot, bought in an internet auction. The photograph stood out to me as I was struck by the surreal atmosphere of the image, with a teenage boy just standing there while birds come and land on him as if he is a statue or some kind of monument. Something about this made me really aware of the stillness of the photograph (monuments do not move but the world around them does), and I wanted to capture this. I was interested in creating a slow reveal of the image, with the birds only becoming apparent after looking at the image for a while. As with many of my other works I was looking to bury the image in the paint somehow, to be rediscovered later by the viewer." Laura Lancaster

Laura Lancaster was born in Hartlepool, UK in 1979 and lives and works in Newcastle Upon Tyne, UK.

Laura's work to date is extracted from an archive of anonymous photographs procured from thrift stores and flea markets. Mediated through painting her work transposes the forgotten and discarded snap-shots of strangers' lives into a ambiguous territory between abstraction and figuration. Divorcing her subjects from their specific context and time, Lancaster relocates them to a place of collective memory and experience that resonates with our own. Laura Lancaster's work oscillates between the nostalgic sentimentality of the celebratory moment, and the melancholic poignancy of the past. Lancaster's recent paintings mark a significant shift in scale and subject. Combining solitary figures and groups of people whose gaze confronts the viewer. These works are paintings of photographs as object, and a continuation of Lancaster's enquiry into deliberately ambiguous imagery that points towards a stranger, darker subtext.

On Balance, is a co-commission with Brighton Festival 2014. The exhibition brings together two works by Swedish artist Jacob Dahlgren, which have been reconfigured for Fabrica's unique space.

 

Heaven is a Place on Earth, is a large floor work comprising 713 polished bathroom scales in candy-pop colours, ranging from turquoise and lime to cerise and black.

 

The Wonderful World of Abstraction, takes its sculptural form from 1000's of metres of multi-coloured ribbon, which are suspended uniformly from a metal frame - to kaleidoscopic effect.

Visitors are invited by Dahlgren to step into his pictorial and sculptural world by walking across and through his artworks.

 

He says, "It's very important to be part of the work, to walk on it and to make that decision to. At first you don't know if this is ok, if you are allowed to or not. Then once you see that you can, have permission to, it's a magical moment."

 

Acknowledging the sensual pleasure of the material world, and taking delight in the moments of physical and social interaction are recurrent themes in Dahgren's work. The commissioning of Heaven is a Place on Earth, has meant Fabrica purchasing hundreds of sets of bathroom scales, manufactured in China and shipped to the UK. There has been an inevitable environmental cost occurred. All Costs Considered, a debate on Tuesday 20 May, seeks to address these questions and weigh up the environmental costs of the exhibition against its educational and social benefits.

Taking the crossing of folklore into woodcarving amongst the rigidity of stone as inspiration, the chapel organ will meet electronic sound in ways that will meet, separate, combine, infuse, distort and confound each of them. Will Ford, (organ scholar) will play from a visual score, whilst Evans manipulates a collection of analogue sequencer patterns and digital tape.

What's important is not the name or the face but the action, the process; the unmistakable reality that now is right here and then gone. Sound reverberates and images stick, let us hope we manage to construct something which does just this, it's certainly all I'm aiming for.

THE GREY LADY GALATEA is a new site specific sculpture made in collaboration between Ben Jeans Houghton (NCL, UK) and Diva Dompe (LA, USA). THE GREY LADY GALATEA is a talking sculpture that offers a guided meditation, exploring and enlivening the ancient imagery that adorns the many sandstone pillars of the Norman Chapel (1078).

THE GREY LADY GALATEA invites you to pause, to look and listen. The illusion the sculpture fosters is there to stretch the gap between seeing and understanding, creating a platform for your imagination
to bloom in suspended disbelief whilst being gently guided by Diva's Californian accent, through this deeply English space.

THE GREY LADY GALATEA was commissioned by Hazel Donkin (Arts Secretary of University College SCR) and is the first in a series of commissions exploring the rich context of Durham Castle at the hands of local contemporary artists.

40 Years of Women Artists - from the Permanent Collection

In celebration of the 40th anniversary of the Garman Ryan Collection, and the strong female characters in the Garman Epstein family and their circle of friends, including Kathleen Garman, Peggy Epstein, Isabel Rawsthorne, Lorna Wishart and Sally Ryan, this exhibition puts the spotlight on the women who feature in our Permanent Collection.
 
The Garman sisters, who hailed from Wednesbury and were daughters of a local doctor, were quite radical and inspirational females, who in the interwar period became part of the bohemian milieu of artistic life in Soho, breaking away from the conventional role of women in those days.
Over the past forty years the role of women in our society has changed dramatically and women have grown equal in all areas of life.  From the 1970s to the present day the Gallery has collected a diverse range of work by women artists and, although proportionately still more men feature in the Collection, nowadays there is no discrepancy between the number of works collected by male and female artists.  Contemporary women artists are on equal terms with their male counterparts, and we have a strong body of work, in all media, from painting, drawing, printmaking, sculpture and photography, by women.
 
This exhibition, opening on International Women’s Day, will examine what defines ‘women’s art’ and makes it distinct from that of male artists, and will include works by Dorothea Wight, Elizabeth Frink, Eileen Cooper, Linder, Paula Rego, Helen Chadwick, Kitty Garman, Rita Donagh, Anya Gallaccio, Gillian Wearing, Tracey Emin, Jane and Louise Wilson, Spartacus Chetwynd and Laura Lancaster.

Spontaneous, affirmative, eurphoric, Beresford's work has been described as "a heady combination of new-age religion, DIY self-help and Charva culture". For this new performance Sophiel Aurora beams in from Star Alcyone, where she lives and works parallel to her Human life as a Geordie/Machem Raver. Using physical Earth Science to bridge the gap between what seems fantastical with what is real, she and her kin offer new ways to use Art to Uplift and Reboot the Consciousness of the Human Species into a State of Ease and Unconditional Love.

The focus of the exhibition is to bring works of art together that physically may seem very much alike, but when placed next to one another appears to reflect very different strategies and aims in their presentation and making.

Many of the art works or part of artworks look like a shelf or fulfill the physical definition of a shelf. But the idea and use of shelves are highly different from artist to artist and from the everyday object known as a shelf.

"But if you give them (the viewers) a small experience which is somehow confusing or profound, but in the realm of their own world, then it doesn't have to be translated, it's already there. Because it's not that far away from theirs", American artist Barbara Bloom.

PAINTING THE PIXEL includes the work of nine international artists who are navigating the inherent paradoxes between the computer's immaterial, encoded matrix and the handmade. The exhibition investigates how digital technology is used as a conceptual tool in painting, how the virtual 'non-space' is reconfigured through the material presence of paint, and how the cultural currency of the image has shifted in relation to the phenomenon of the Internet. Curated by Rachel Sharp as part of her practice-led PhD research at Northumbria University. 

On Tues. 4 March, Gallery North will host a tour of the exhibition and artists' panel from 4-6 pm followed by a wine reception from 6-8 pm.

Workplace Gallery is pleased to announce Every song the same a solo exhibition of new works by Joe Clark.

 

During a residency on the Croatian island of Vis in 2013 Clark conceived and executed a new series of photographs depicting blades of Seagrass in gestural configurations against the gradient of the setting sun. 

 

"In the Seagrass series the photographic contents can be understood through the idea of vision - and its supposed analogue in photography - mediating between bodily experience and interior life. The layer of curved organic fragments at first glance appears to be arranged by chance, but keeping in mind the idea of the camera as a symbol-making machine, the curves seem to stand in relationship to one another as hieroglyphs or letters of an unknown language. The shapes also have a visual relationship to formations which are found in the human eye: small floating fragments which ordinarily go unnoticed, but become apparent against a uniform backdrop (such as a blue sky), and perhaps come into optical focus only during a moment of mental abstraction. There is then, in the images, a sense of introspection: the seagrass can be seen as a stand-in for a layer of language or of interior imagery which comes into mental focus through transcendent thought."

Private Utopia: Contemporary Art from the British Council Collection is a major new exhibition which has been created in partnership with the Asahi Shimbun; Tokyo Station Gallery; Itami City Museum of Art; Kochi Museum of Art and Okayama Museum of Art. Together, the curators of each museum have selected works from the holdings of the British Council Collection.

Private Utopia spans the last two decades and showcases the range of work produced by British artists during this time. What is particularly striking about the selection is the array of themes, ideas and materials. Crossovers into music, literature, social history and anthropology are common threads running through the exhibition, reflecting the multifarious nature of contemporary art in the UK today and the broadening definition of what art can be.

The curators from each of the Japanese museums have jointly selected works by artists who came to prominence in the mid 1990's - Jake and Dinos Chapman, Peter Doig, Gary Hume, Sarah Lucas and Cornelia Parker - alongside younger artists who have emerged in the last decade, such as Haroon Mirza, Martin Boyce and Roger Hiorns. Of the 28 artists included in the exhibition, 17 have been nominated for the Turner Prize, which is a testament to the quality of artists in the British Council Collection.

New purchases have been made especially for the exhibition and we are delighted to showcase works by Marcus Coates, Sarah Lucas and Ryan Gander for the first time internationally. Additional works have been lent with great generosity for this exhibition: So Many Ways to Hurt You (The Life and Times of Adrian Street) (2010) by Jeremy Deller; I'm Dead (2010) by David Shrigley; The Woolworths Choir of 1979 (2012) by Elizabeth Price; and three recent Untitled paintings (2010) by Laura Lancaster.

Glasgow Short Film Festival

International Competition

13-16 February 2014

Scotland's leading short film festival returns for four days of screenings, workshops and parties. Whilst CCA remains our hub, this year the International competition will take place in the state-of-the-art GFT Screen 3, and we venture into The Arches, Glasgow School of Art and an underground car park.

International Competition 2: Reality Bleed:

 

This programme draws inspiration from reality in startling ways. Whether placing conversations in strange new contexts or secretly capturing the sinister banality of state power on camera, each of these films investigates the ethics of the moving image. The programme includes works from China and Finland, as well as a revelatory film featuring a cast of first time performers, all inmates in a Scottish youth prison.

The Case was commissioned by Berwick Visual Arts and Berwick Film & Media Arts Festival. Produced together with independent producer and filmmaker Mat Fleming. Cinematography by Minttumaari Mäntynen, edited by Edwin Mingard and original score by Marek Gabrysch.
