Vital Signs is a one-off performance which examines the interconnectedness of Durham Castle and its inhabitants. The piece consists of four musicians using medieval percussion instruments to play a musical score created from data gathered from Durham Castle's conservation and monitoring systems. Working with percussionist Brendan Murphy, Jo Coupe has transformed information on temperature, humidity, and light levels in the castle as well as numbers of visitors and postal deliveries into a suite of compositions, which aim to reveal the rhythms and patterns of human presence in the building.

 

A sound installation based on a recording of Vital Signs will be installed in the Norman Chapel at Durham Castle from 14 November www.dur.ac.uk/durham.castle/whatson/

After the performance there will be a drinks reception and informal Q&A with the artist Jo Coupe, the musicians and the Curator of Durham Castle.

This commission is part of Meeting Point, a year-long project led by contemporary art specialists Arts&Heritage. Leading UK and international artists have partnered with nine museums in the North East and Yorkshire to produce new artworks inspired by the museums and their collections. Funded by Arts Council England’s Museum Resilience Fund, Meeting Point presents artworks in unexpected places and supports small and medium scale museums to commission artists, who will create a piece of work in response to the venue.

hangmenProjects is delighted to invite you to Peter J. Evans’ first solo exhibition in Stockholm. As our artist-in-residence, Evans' has been at the Nordic guest studio Malongen, making works for the show.

 

Peter J. Evans is interested in the nature and ideas of finite truth in an infinitely changeable universe and works with drawing, sculpture, installation, performance and sound in an attempt to make sense of the ungraspable realities we live within. A specialist in non-specialism he has been making art, music and other constructions since 1992. Fascinated by systems and patterns, Evans’ artistic process is a meditative investigation into reality and the stories underneath the everyday surface of things. The lines in his drawings operating as metaphorical maps that mark out and describe interactions between objects, atoms, emotions and places. Each line both is and represents, a path that has been travelled and the changes which occurred during the journey.

 

The interest in what lies beneath the everyday surface of things, the patterns in the chaos and the small moments that shift one’s whole being continue to pull on the hand and the mind. The practice keeps shifting and flowing along with everything else as decay and renewal endlessly progress as the seconds tick past. Making work is just another way of trying to make sense of what all this might be about

 

Peter J Evans was born in 1976 in Oxford, U.K. and lives and works in Newcastle upon Tyne. He attended Dartington College of Arts from 1995-1998 earning a BA (Hons) in Visual Performance, later gaining an MRes in Digital Media from Newcastle University between 2008-2010.

Mike Pratt wins the Koninklijke Prijs - The Royal Award for Modern Painting, Holland

WORKPLACE is delighted to congratulate British artist Mike Pratt on winning the Koninklijke Prijs voor Vrije Schilderkunst 2016

 

This prestigious Royal Award for Modern Painting was presented by King Willem-Alexander of Holland to four young artists yesterday afternoon. An exhibition of the prize-winning paintings along with works by twenty other contenders is on show at Koninklijk Paleis Amsterdam until 16 November. 

 

The jury said of Mike's work: 

 

"Pratt’s submission demonstrates vision. His three dimensional works are composed of silicon, epoxy and styrofoam. Still, because of their colourful surfaces, they can be considered part of the domain of painting. The messy combination of material and colour is simply delightful and refers to Bad Painting. What is more it’s impossible to see the objects other than in the framework of art history. With an ear (Vincent van Gogh) and a urinal (Marcel Duchamp) Pratt puts himself forward with possibly the two most talked-about ‘objects’ from modern art history. The jury appreciates the courage and the knowledge that this demonstrates."

 

The Koninklijke Prijs is annually presented to encourage talented young painters active in the Netherlands.

The Award was instituted in 1871 by HM King William III. After King William III it was continued by Queen Emma, Queen Wilhelmina, Queen Juliana and Queen Beatrix. They turned this into a true royal tradition. In the year 2013 King Willem-Alexander continued this tradition by presenting the Award in the Royal Palace Amsterdam.

Mike Pratt was born in 1987 in Seaham, North East England. He graduated from Northumbria University in 2009 where he was awarded the Paul Mason Sculpture Prize, and in 2014 he completed a two-year postgraduate programme at De Ateliers in Amsterdam, Netherlands where he currently lives and works. Hugo Canoilas: Unfaithful to daydreams, Installation View, Workplace London 2016

Hugo Canoilas was born in 1977 in Lisbon, Portugal and lives and works in Vienna, Austria. Recent Exhibitions and projects include: When elephants march in, curated my Mark Kremer at De Appel, Amsterdam, NL;  Paradise Birds - 30th São Paulo Biennial;  Infinite Tasks, Gulbenkian Museum, Lisbon; Dear painter paint me - with heart and reason, Trafó Contemporary Art Center, Budapest. Canoilas is currently developing a major project for MNAC - Chiado Museum in Portugal opening in November 2016. 

 

ProjectoMap is a curatorial non-profit project of research and mapping the universe of contemporary art in Portugal which began in 2009, and was publically launched in 2011 by the Cultural Association Colectivo de Curadores. Seven years later, ProjectoMap has become one of the biggest online platforms presenting itself as a database and an interactive map, offering a differenciated reading of the geography of Portuguese contemporary practice. ProjectoMap has been a Portuguese phenomenon, with national and international recognitation, developing and executing conferences, presentations and exhibitions in Portugal and abroad. Today, ProjectoMap is led by the curators Alda Galsterer and Verónica de Mello.
