About Louise Giovanelli:
Louise Giovanelli, Axis, 2020, oil on linen, 27 x 22 cm, 10 5/8 x 8 5/8 in

Louise Giovanelli makes intense, luminous, paintings that refer to art historical and contemporary mechanics of viewing and consuming imagery. Cropped and isolated images are repeated and restated, dislocated from their origin and repositioned within a rhizomatic series of works. By employing optical colour mixing techniques of the early Renaissance, Giovanelli connects post-modern strategies back through time to artists such as Duccio and the canons of Art History. Revealing the underpainting beneath and below the image; and often finished with gestural glyph-like inscriptions on top of the illusionistic surface, Giovanelli's works flit restlessly through painterly strategies - bringing together interruptions, false starts, and obfuscation into a corrupted yet beautiful totality.

Louise Giovanelli was born in London in 1993 and lives and works in Manchester UK. She completed her BA in Fine Art at Manchester School of Art in 2015, and was a student at Städelschule in Frankfurt Am Main, Germany from 2018 - 2020.  Recent solo exhibitions include include; Aerial Silk, GRIMM, New York, NY (US); Time Inside, Frutta Gallery, Rome (IT); Louise Giovanelli, Manchester Art Gallery, Manchester (UK); Louise Giovanelli, Workplace Foundation, Gateshead (UK); Life Still, Clearing, New York (USA); El oro de los tigres, Air de Paris, Romainville (FR); Tales of the haunted and the body, curated by Kuba Paris, Casa Cristea Schneider, Berlin (DE), among others.

Louise is currently exhibiting in Transmission and her forthcoming solo exhibition at Workplace will be in October 2020.
